Welcome to A Wish for Children !
WHO WE ARE: A Wish for Children is a non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization committed to working with children and families in both the U.S. and in rural communities in the East African countries of Burundi and Rwanda by assisting families in their efforts to improve their own lives.
WHERE WE WORK: Burundi and Rwanda share a history of war and AIDS and are currently experiencing economic, educational, agricultural, and health crises. Orphans are abundant and grandparents are stepping in to raise children left behind by the deaths of their own children to AIDS. Faced with such overwhelming need, A Wish for Children staff collaborates with program participants to create community-driven projects that empower the beneficiaries to break the cycle of poverty, strengthen local education, and improve nutrition and health. In the U.S., A Wish for Children is partnered with the Women and Family Life Center of Guilford, CT. We offer all phases of international adoption support and education by hosting informational sessions on international adoption, waiting family and support, support groups for children who have been adopted from overseas and for parents who have adopted children from overseas. In addition, we offer additional post adoption support by way of imparting information on finalization of adoptions in the U.S., and obtaining U.S. citizenship, passports, and social security coverage for the children.
WHAT WE DO: A Wish for Children employs a unique approach to development work in Africa that results in changes lasting long after the project activities end. A Wish for Children believes that those living within a community must be the ones to identify the priorities in the area, the possible solutions, and the steps necessary for change. Communities themselves take ownership of projects while A Wish for Children assists with the required resources and knowledge. A Wish for Children’s current projects include educational initiatives to benefit the Twa (pygmy) population in Burundi and Rwanda, agricultural training, childcare assistance while parents train, orphanage assistance, health and nutrition — all resulting in thousands of self-reliant individuals and families in Burundi and Rwanda who experienced profound improvement in their daily lives.
